Movie Series Recap: Kung Fu Panda 2

This past Sunday, I went to go see Kung Fu Panda 2 at the Ferg Theater, and it was definitely time well spent!  I got free food, great entertainment, learned something I never would have before, and I got to get to know a new friend.
First off, I stopped by at 4 o’clock to see what the matinee showing was all about.  Walking up, there was a whole line of families making their way into the theater, picking up all kinds of yummy goodies to snack on. (I’m talking chips, and candy, and chocolate, and Capri suns and probably food I missed out on because it was already gotten by the early birds!)  As is turns out, the matinee showing was working in conjunction with the Graduate Parent Support program, or GPS (http://www.gps.ua.edu/).
The GPS is a program here at UA that was started for graduate students who had kids, and the program now works with any UA student who has a child or children.  GPS has the scoop on a whole bunch of parenting help, support, and advice.   And on top of it all, they provide great opportunities, like a matinee showing at a time when kids are awake, for these UA families.
Now, I’m honestly not that big on making my business everyone else’s business (not that I won’t answer any question any random person asks me), but as an expectant mother myself, learning about the GPS program could not have come at a better time for my husband and me.
For the 8 o’clock showing, the movie got moved outside to a giant blow-up screen in the plaza. Not only did all of us who went get to enjoy the movie and free popcorn (made on-site!), but also the open air and nighttime breeze. AMAZING.
The movie was even better watching it this second time around. It was also really nice getting to know my fellow Team Ferg blogger, Tiara. I don’t know what it is, but it seems like a lot of people stop making friends after freshman year. We find a few people who we get along with and we stick to hanging out with who we know and doing what we know we like to do with them.  So, here’s my little soap box for today—CHANGE IT UP!
I know it’s a little cliché, and awkward, and uncomfortable, but it’s almost always WORTH IT! I have not made a new, good friend since my freshman year, no lies, and I can honestly say it’s likely because I stuck to my routine and didn’t give new people half a chance.   Just checking out things on around campus and not bringing along someone I already know to cling onto has given me great opportunities for new friendships.  And what could it hurt?
So, thanks GPS for teaching me something new, Tiara for the possibility of a new friendship, and the Movie Series, the Dragon Warrior and the Furious Five for bringing it all together!

Building community with Kung Fu Panda 2:
Ferg Movie Night on the Plaza
Want to catch a movie without driving out to the theaters? The
Ferg Movie Night on the Plaza is a great way to see recently (about to be)
released movies for the nominal cost of pulling up a chair and grabbing some
popcorn.

The atmosphere of Sunday’s movie night was akin to a drive in
theatre: The large movie screen was set outside in the open for all to watch,
and students and other members of the community pulled up chairs or brought
blankets to the event.

The Ferg also made popcorn to give to students as they walked up
to watch the movie. Many people also ordered pizza, and shared it with their
friends.

Kung Fu Panda 2 was also an excellent choice for a movie. Many
people seemingly enjoyed the jokes and clapped at the end of the film. (They
even wanted to see the credits!)

I felt like there was a large sense of community, which is
different from the typical “movie theatre” experience that we are accustomed
to. I am definitely looking forward to the next movie night on the Plaza, and I
can’t wait to bring more of my friends!

Oh, and did I mention that this was free?

Fall Movie Series Kicks-Off with Kung Fu Panda 2!

Who else out there counts themselves a broke college student?

It is really not that much fun living on a budget (oh, reality…), and if you’re anything like me and the likely thousands of other UA students (I feel like I can safely say that, seeing as how there are 30,000 of us now) who penny pinch here and there (and there… and there… and there), you jump on opportunities for FREE STUFF.

Yes, FREE STUFF. Those two words are like the shiny things in store windows that you can’t afford, only better, because they’re FREE. We’ll take free food, free cozies, free t-shirts, and we hold no shame in raiding Get on Board Day, Week of Welcome, and the myriad of other on-campus and community events for the free anythings there are to snatch up.

So, the scoop on some FREE FUN this weekend?—FREE MOVIES. You laugh, you cry, you get to forget exactly how much you should be getting done...  And what? It’s free? EVEN BETTER, AMIGO.
Kung Fu Panda 2 is showing on Sunday at the Ferg Theater at 4 and at 8 and not only do you get to go watch it for free, they feed you popcorn and drinks too. – Check out this preview—it’s hilarious

Kung Fu Panda 2 is one of the many movies that the Ferg somehow gets their hands on before the film goes to DVD to share with us lucky ducklings.  Being the somewhat nosy person that I am, I asked Diana Merchan, an Event Planner for the Ferguson Center, what the scoop was with this whole free movies/ free food thing.

Q: What’s the movie series all about? Why do it? What is so cool about it?
DM: The move series is about getting students to come out and watch movies that are no longer in theaters but have not come out on DVD yet. We pick movies that will not only be educational for our students but also ones that will leave a good message. This year our theme for the movie series is culture.
Q: Who picks the movies that get shown?
DM:  Several RHM students and myself. We decide on the movie after reading the surveys that people fill out from the past movies. Then we just pick the best one that would go well with our theme and that has a good message.
Q: Anything you’d have us know about the movie series and what there is to come?
DM: We are still deciding on what movies come next, but as soon as we know we will announce it on Facebook, Twitter and our Ferg website.
**That’s http://www.facebook.com/TheFergatUA for the Ferg’s facebook; http://twitter.com/#!/TheFergUA for the Ferg Twitter; and http://ferguson.ua.edu/index.cfm for the Ferg website.

So, if you like free stuff (which, let’s face it, we all do), escaping the real world for a couple of hours, need a study break, want to catch the movie for the first time, or just want to watch it over again because it was awesome (like me =P), come and enjoy the free food and entertainment this Sunday, September 25. Matinee showing is at 4, and the evening showing is at 8.

So let’s go to the movies! – I just had to include this link, you guys. Every time I think about the movies, this song pops into my head, and seeing as it is going to be stuck in my head all day, I feel inexplicably compelled to share it with you!

Tailgating for a Cause: Rising Tide Student Tailgate this Saturday on the Quad!

Though I have never been a “huge” fan of football, I can safely say that tailgating is my favorite aspect of the sports traditions here at the University of Alabama. I love the food, fun and atmosphere created by people who love the same school that I do.

This weekend, I am especially looking forward to the Rising Tide Student Tailgate. Rising Tide is a free tailgate that offers students at UA a chance to mingle with each other on the Quad.

When I attended the tailgate last year, there was plenty of food by Full Moon Barbecue, a live band and even video games (which is my kind of tailgate)!

I especially love the outreach that Rising Tide creates for students. Last year, this student tailgate promoted alcohol awareness for those tailgating with them. Rising Tides is still supporting this cause through their Facebook page through the “Less Than U Think” campaign.

I hope to see the same amount of outreach and support for UA students during the next couple of tailgates on the Quad!

If you would like more information on the Rising Tide tailgate, be sure to like “Rising Tide Student Tailgate" or "The Ferg at UA" on Facebook!

The Whole Shebang:
This Saturday, September 17th,  is the Family Weekend Tailgate. It’s a tailgate that Parents Programs is throwing for students and their families who are making the pilgrimage to our capstone dearest to spend the weekend in all out, total UA style. (Parent Programs is a part of Student Affairs, for anyone who doesn’t recognize the name) Anyway, I’ve heard that there are about three thousand people coming to this shin-dig, and I can say that impresses me a whole lot.  As my friends have said, “UA goes big, or stays home.”

I have only ever been to one football game (don’t get mad, I watch on TV when I can!), and I definitely can’t say that I am a seasoned tailgater.  But I will say that in all my time here, experiencing a game-day (the way you see it depicted on all those nifty UA brochures and online) is one of the things I am determined to do at least once before I graduate.

And so we’re off! I am buckling down and really going for it—the whole shebang-- the complete game-day tailgating experience. I’m going to get that washable tattoo put on my cheek, and I’m going to take pictures of random people in copious amounts of houndstooth and crimson, and if I’m lucky, I am going to find that guy with all those UA tattoos.

So, this Saturday at Presidential Park, at 3PM, three thousand people (students and family alike!) and I will be rolling with the tide, getting ready to see our school make us proud. Roll Tide!

Perspectives on Family Weekend: Interview with Litsa Orban, coordinator of the First Year Experience and Family Weekend staff member

September is always an exciting time of year for students at UA. School has barely begun and the sights and sounds of football season can be all seen across campus.

However, September is also a very exciting time for families of UA students as well. Every year, the Office of Parent Programs hosts Family Weekend (hyperlink: http://parents.ua.edu/familyWeekend.cfm), a weekend geared towards offering the families of UA students a chance to visit the campus and really experience what it means to be a part of what we call the “UA Family.”

I had the pleasure of talking with one of our newest members of the UA Family. Litsa Orban is the new coordinator of the First Year Experience and a staff member for Family Weekend. Though Litsa did not graduate from the University of Alabama, she has actually been involved with the UA Office of Parent Programs since 2010, when she was a graduate intern.

She has a deep love for UA, and that is most apparent through her work on Family Weekend:

Q: What is your role or involvement with Family Weekend? How long have you been involved with this event?
LO: Family Weekend planning is a team effort with all staff of First Year Experience and Parents Programs. My specific responsibility was to plan the Family Weekend Student Affairs Brunch. Truly, the execution of this large event is a team effort with all areas of the Division of Student Affairs.
Q: What is Family Weekend about? Why is it important to the UA community and families?
LO: Family Weekend is about sharing. It is about students sharing their lives at UA with their family members; it is about the UA family sharing the place we love with our students’ families; it is about families sharing their lives with the University. At the end of the weekend, we are all family.
Q: Has attending or working Family Weekend changed or deepened your perspective on what the “UA Family” is? How so?
LO: UA is special and Family Weekend reminds everyone exactly how special it is. Although our students’ family members may not always be on campus, they are our family. So, it’s nice to have the whole family together.
Q: What are you looking forward to from this event?
LO: Family Weekend is a time for family members to experience The Capstone. It is always fun to witness others falling in love with UA.
With Family Weekend coming up this Saturday, we are all very excited to meet more of our UA Family!
